    Barbara Larson Humanitarian Award

    (awarded in even years)

    The Barbara A. Larson Humanitarian Award is named      in memory of a long-time SPN member, officer and pediatric nurse who made a significant impact on the health and well-being of children around the world. This award is given to an individual (preferably a pediatric nurse) who exemplifies the ideals, values, and commitment held by Barbara A. Larson to serve children by working to improve their health, well-being, and/or living conditions.

    Nominations for this award are now closed. The winners will be recognized at the 2018 Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado during the Awards Gala. Learn about previous award winners here.

    Margaret S. Miles Distinguisged Service Award

    (awarded in odd years)

    The Margaret S. Miles Distinguished Service Award was named after SPN's first President. It recognizes a member of SPN who has made exceptional contributions to the Society of Pediatric Nurses and to pediatric nursing. This member has demonstrated outstanding leadership, participation, and contributions toward achieving the goals of the Society of Pediatric Nurses.

    SPN Excellence Awards

    Clinical Practice
    This award recognizes a staff nurse who has made a significant contribution to the care of children and their families, such as the development and implementation of a transition care program for cystic fibrosis patients.

    Nursing Research
    This award recognizes a nurse who has made a significant contribution to the well-being and health care of children and their families through active participation in a program of nursing research, such as developing a research study examining the effectiveness of CHG bathing on central line care in acute care patients.

    Education
    This award recognizes a nurse who has made a significant contribution to pediatric nursing as an educator, such as the development of a back-to-sleep module for a specific population that provides the opportunity for students to be involved in the development and implementation. Applicants may be in the clinical or academic setting.

    Advanced Practice
    This award recognizes an advanced practice nurse who has made a significant contribution to the care of children and their families, such as the development of an application or tool to monitor pain. An advanced practice nurse includes Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Practitioners. 

    Clinical Scholarship
    This award recognizes a hospital, unit, group or agency that has contributed significantly to the well-being and health care of children and their families through the consistent application of scholarship in clinical practice, such as developing a team-based project that can be replicated in other hospitals, units, etc. Examples include bedside change-of-shift report and the establishment of family-centered rounds. 

    This award recognizes a staff nurse who has made a significant contribution to the care of children and their families, such as the development and implementation of a transition care program for cystic fibrosis patients.
    Nominations Requirements:
    • Nominee must be a member of SPN
    • Two short narratives
    • Nominee's CV/resume
    • Two letters of recommendation

    RESEARCH AND EBP GRANTS

    Research and EBP grants are awarded annually at the SPN Annual Conference; Evidence-based Practice Grant ($2,500) supported by Children's Mercy Hospital and the Corrine Barnes Research Grant (two $2500 grant awards). 

    • The purpose of this grant is to support research studies and evidence-based practice projects (EBP) related to children and their families. These grants are awarded to SPN members and may include research studies or EBP projects ranging from pilot work to large, multisite studies. Student theses, dissertations, or EBP project proposals are accepted.

    • The 2018 call for proposals now closed. All applicants will be notified as to the status of their submission by March 15, 2018). 

      The Evidence-based Practice Grant is supported by Children's Mercy Hospital.

      SCHOLARSHIPS

      Scholarships are awarded at the Annual Conference held in April. 

      • Academic Education Scholarship 
        In an effort to help members meet academic goals, two academic scholarships are awarded yearly. The application cycle opens in November and concludes in January. 
        • The 2018 application cycle is now closed. Applicants will be notified as to the status of their submission by April 1, 2018.
      • PNCB / SPN Conference Scholarship
        The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, in collaboration with the Society of Pediatric Nurses, offers a joint Scholarship to attend the annual SPN conference. SPN and PNCB are committed to increasing the knowledge base and enhancing the clinical, professional, and leadership development of certified pediatric nurses. Application cycle opens fall annually. 

      ANF NURSING RESEARCH GRANT

      • The American Nurses Foundation Nursing Research Grants Program was founded 56 years ago to encourage the research career development of nurses.  Each year, through this program, ANF provides funds to beginner and experiences nurse researchers for conducting studies that contribute toward the advancement of nursing science and the enhancement of patient care.
