As I review the accomplishments of SPN over the past year, I am in awe of the knowledge and expertise our members bring to their service on the Board of Directors, committees, task forces, as well as our educational programs. I can already sense that 2024 will be another successful year working towards our mission of providing you with excellent resources and education in pediatric nursing!

As you may recall in 2021, SPN's DEI Task Force requested information to gain a baseline understanding of SPN membership. That information assisted the task force in working to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion were taken into consideration for SPN processes and practices, in addition to influencing the creation of new services and resources that would benefit membership.
SPN had a jam-packed 2023 filled with educational and inspiring webinars. Now is a great time to catch up on any webinars you may have missed. And with SPN’s new Leaning Center, it’s even easier to view the previous webinars and earn Nursing Continuing Professional Development Credit.

PEDIATRIC NURSES WEEK
The Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN) recently created a micro-learning video about the risk of measles, how to prevent its spread, and the treatment of patients who have contracted the disease. SPN recognizes that this information is relevant across a variety of practice settings and pediatric nursing positions for providing guidance for measles prevention to those you serve. Utilize SPN’s measles video to refresh yourself and those you work with about how to mitigate the risk of contracting measles and how to handle cases of measles that you may encounter.
SPN encourages you to share this quick video with your peers as an opportunity to discuss the signs of a measles outbreak in your community.

The pediatric nursing workforce has faced unprecedented challenges over the past several years. As the complexity of patient care and severity of illnesses increase, it is paramount that our profession remains committed to cultivating psychological safety and embedding the principles of high reliability. This 75-minute interactive session will review the barriers to patient and staff safety, discuss the influence that workplace culture has on staff perceptions and behaviors and discuss opportunities for improvement.

Approximately 1.1 million children in prekindergarten through 12th grade experienced unstable housing during the 2020-2021 school year, according to the National Center for Homeless Education. Children living in unstable housing are more likely to suffer from poor physical, mental, and sexual health outcomes, as well as commit suicide. Learn how unstable housing interrelates with substance use and HIV risk along with several promising interventions for addressing substance use and HIV risk during this webinar.

Join SPN on World Mental Health Day for a special screening of the short-form documentary directed by Lizzie Costello “The Wait to Nowhere: When a Crisis Goes Untreated”. Without the infrastructure necessary to connect needed resources for mental health care, pediatric emergency departments across the country are filling up with kids in crisis. "The Wait to Nowhere: When a Crisis Goes Untreated" reveals an unspeakable reality: children living in the ER for days, weeks and even months at a time, awaiting dedicated care. This film explores the issue and touches on solutions. True stories are told by those living this nightmare, including hospitals that are caught up in a failed system, while lawmakers help lay out a plan to address the crisis before even more children's lives are lost.

The purpose of this grant is to support research studies and evidence-based practice projects (EBP) related to children and their families. These grants are awarded to SPN members, and may include research studies or EBP projects ranging from pilot work to large, multisite studies. Student theses, dissertations, or EBP project proposals are accepted. The proposed study or EBP project will be completed within a one-year period upon receipt of the grant funds.
Submit a letter of intent by October 1, 2023 at 5:00 pm CST including the title of proposed project, investigator name(s), institution name(s) and a brief overview of the project (click here for the form). The application and all supporting materials will be due in December, 2023. Send submissions electronically to: [email protected]. Complete applications will be assigned to a review panel of either research or EBP experts, depending on the type of application; a list of the criteria submissions will be review using can be found here. Applicants and awardees will be notified in March, 2024. Awards will be announced at the SPN Annual Conference in April.
Cincinnati Children’s is recruiting 1 – 2 individuals with relevant expertise in clinical medicine and/or research to serve on a national expert panel. This panel will work to develop evidence-driven consensus recommendations for appropriate high-flow nasal cannula use in hospitalized pediatric patients with bronchiolitis. This work is being conducted under the auspices of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
